Naviera Juan de la Cosa, which operates tours for the Marigalante 2 in Puerto Vallarta, held a recognition ceremony to thank those who participated in rescue efforts following the sinking of its predecessor vessel. The original Marigalante sank in the waters of Banderas Bay on the afternoon of Oct. 10, 2025. The ceremony took place at the “Puerto Mágico” Maritime Terminal and was led by company President Fernando González Corona, who presented a donation of $200,000 pesos to the Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Department.
Among the officials recognized at the event were Vice Adm. Ubaldo Gómez Rodríguez, head of the Port Captaincies and Maritime Affairs Unit; Vice Adm. Arturo García Fernández, commander of the 12th Naval Zone; retired Adm. Juan Ortiz Guarneros, director of the National Port System Administration (ASIPONA); Pablo Fernández, harbormaster of Marina Vallarta; Sergio Ramírez, state director of Civil Protection for Jalisco; and Misael López, director of Civil Protection and Firefighters for Puerto Vallarta.
López accepted the donation, which will be used to purchase lifesaving equipment for department operations. “This donation helps us continue our work, invest in prevention, and protect the safety of our municipality’s residents,” López said. “Our personnel are highly trained, and we are prepared for whatever comes this rainy season.”
González Corona dedicated words of gratitude to all the individuals who generously responded to the emergency to ensure there were no serious injuries or fatalities during the sinking. He also noted that “it was a privilege and a true feat to see the Marigalante, a vessel built entirely of wood in the old-fashioned way, sail the waters of the bay for 30 years.”
The ceremony was also attended by Puerto Vallarta Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía, who congratulated the Civil Protection and Fire Department. He emphasized that equipping the agency has been a priority for his administration. “When our administration began, we received a Civil Protection department with very limited resources. So far during our government, we have acquired five trucks, three Jet Skis, and beach surveillance equipment,” Munguía concluded.
