A GoFundMe account has been established with the goal of raising $10,000 USD to help feed those affected by COVID-19. The goal was later revised to $15,000 after an outpouring of donations.

As of 4/20/20 the fund had raised almost half of the goal, $4,685 had been given by some 39 donors. That number had climbed to $8,990 by 4/26/20.

“They started with their own money and contributions from a few friends. Friday night, my husband Luis Tello called me in DC (where I’m stuck recovering from minor but emergency surgery), and asked me “how do you set up these GoFundMe things?” That quickly became “Ill do that from here. You focus on buying and delivering the food,” Crist wrote on his Facebook page.

The fund has been established by local businessman Paul Crist who wrote on the page that “We are a just a diverse group of Vallarta friends – some Mexican, some immigrants to Mexico from the US, some Gay, some Straight, some Trans, some Bi, some Guys, some Girls, some Non-BinaryAll, just people who are trying to help in every way we can.”

The project has already delivered more than 160 food baskets to local families.

“We’re buying, assembling, and delivering basic household grocery packages, with healthy staple foods, fruits and vegetables, hygiene products, baby diapers, and masks to limit the possibility of spreading the virus,” Crist said on the GoFundMe page.

In Mexico there is no help for those workers that have been laid off. With tourism the business in Puerto Vallarta, locals have no way to keep an income coming in.

Here are some videos and photos about the food drive.
