A coalition of organizations and collectives known as Red Diversidad Vallarta expressed concern following the killing of Óscar Gael Maldonado, a 19-year-old member of the LGBT+ community whose body was found in Puerto Vallarta under violent circumstances.
According to publicly available information, Maldonado’s body showed multiple stab wounds and had been abandoned wrapped in blankets and plastic. The group said the nature of the case requires a serious, thorough and professional investigation free of prejudice.
In a public statement, the coalition called on the Fiscalía del Estado de Jalisco to apply Mexico’s standardized protocol for investigating crimes committed against LGBT+ people.
The protocol, issued under the framework of the Conferencia Nacional de Procuración de Justicia, is intended to strengthen investigations using a human rights approach, with principles of equality and non-discrimination.
The group also called for:
- Authorities to pursue all lines of investigation, including any potential motive related to prejudice based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
- Dignified, sensitive and timely treatment for the victim’s family.
- Responsible communication regarding progress in the investigation.
- Information from state authorities on the effective implementation of the protocol in Jalisco.
The coalition said violence against LGBT+ people must not be normalized or ignored and called for institutions in Puerto Vallarta to conduct investigations with professionalism, sensitivity and a commitment to the truth.
“The life of Óscar Gael deserves justice. His family deserves the truth. The community deserves guarantees of non-repetition,” the statement said.
