Prominent activist and ambassador of Vallarta Pride, Kenya Cuevas, made a visit to Puerto Vallarta on August 9 and 10, 2024, during which she held strategic meetings with municipal authorities and supported initiatives of the local LGTBIQ+ community.
Request to Make Permanent the Municipal Council of Sexual Diversity
In the meeting held on Friday, August 9, 2024, with the interim mayor of Puerto Vallarta, Pepe Martínez, Cuevas and the local diversity council asked the interim mayor to present an agreement to the City Council to make the Municipal Council of Sexual Diversity permanent, ensuring that it does not expire on September 30, 2024 (the end of the current term of the present government administration).
Attending the meeting with Cuevas were Daniel Estrada, Marisela Marín, Dennisse Covarrubias, and Víctor Espíndola.
“This Council, which will be made official before Martínez’s government report on September 10, 2024, will be supported by a regulation and a public call that will guarantee the representation of all LGTBIQ+ organizations and activists in Puerto Vallarta,” explained Victor Espindola.
Meeting with Elected Councilors: Consolidating the LGTBIQ+ Agenda in Puerto Vallarta
Prior to the meeting with the mayor, Cuevas met with the elected councilors Luis Escoto, Chuyita López, Micaela Vázquez and Melissa Madero from the Morena, Futuro and Movimiento Ciudadano parties.
During this meeting, two important agreements were established:
To manage with the current mayor the permanence of the Municipal Council of Sexual Diversity and to propose for the next administration the creation of a Directorate of Sexual Diversity through the modification of the organic regulations of the municipality.
The creation of a City Council Commission on Diversity will be sought, if the city council commissions are increased.
Presentation of the Guide for Attention to Diverse Women
Another significant moment of the visit was the presentation of the Guide for Attention to Diverse Women, held at the Justice Center for Women of Puerto Vallarta.
At this event, Cuevas highlighted the relevance of this guide as a comprehensive care model for diverse women, especially trans women, in the field of justice.
The guide, which was celebrated as a best practice, has the potential to be replicated throughout the network of Justice Centers for Women in the country, consolidating Jalisco as a pioneer state in this type of initiatives.
Detection Day in Colonia 5 de Diciembre and Closing of the “I Take Care of Myself, I Take Care of You LGBT” Program
On the night of August 9, 2024, Cuevas participated in an HIV and syphilis detection day focused on sex workers in Colonia 5 de Diciembre.
Organized by Comusida and the organization IncluY, this activity included prior discussions on improving care for people with HIV at the IMSS and CAPASITS, a topic that will be taken up again during the activist’s next visit.
On Saturday, August 10, 2024, Kenya participated in the closing of the “Me Cuido, Te Cuido LGBT” program, where it was agreed to form a team of volunteers for future detection days and the creation of a statistical data system to improve comprehensive care for sex workers, especially trans women.
