Puerto Vallarta’s cemeteries will become open-air galleries this fall as part of a new initiative inviting muralists to create works inspired by Day of the Dead traditions.

The Vallarta Institute of Culture announced the call for artists under the program “Muralists in the Framework of Day of the Dead.” The project will transform the walls of the city’s three municipal cemeteries with murals that highlight local identity and history.

Artists and collectives are encouraged to submit proposals that reinterpret local characters, traditions and historic events through the imagery and symbolism of Day of the Dead. To give the project visual cohesion, organizers suggested three color palettes: “Vibrant Marigold,” “Nocturnal Magic” and “Vallarta Sunset.”

The call for entries is open from Sept. 16 to Sept. 30. A selection committee will review applications from Oct. 1 to Oct. 15, and chosen artists must complete their murals by Oct. 28. The works will be unveiled with guided tours on Nov. 1 and 2, coinciding with the city’s Day of the Dead festivities.

The effort, supported by the administration of Mayor Luis Munguía González, aims to revitalize public spaces while showcasing the artistic talent of Puerto Vallarta.

Details and application forms are available at bit.ly/muralistas-convocatoria and bit.ly/registro-muralistas.
