The prestigious luxury travel publication Condé Nast Traveler has announced the winners of its 2025 Reader’s Choice Awards for Best Cities in the World. Puerto Vallarta secured the second-place ranking in the Small City category, finishing just behind Victoria, Canada, and ahead of globally recognized destinations like Florence, Italy; San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; and San Sebastian, Spain.
As noted in the magazine’s announcement, which is available online, while “Puerto Vallarta is often associated with cruise ships, crowded beaches, and bars; it’s once you venture a little off the more touristed path that you’ll really discover the treasures of this city.”
The publication specifically highlighted the charm of the old town with cobblestone streets lined with bougainvillea, and the appeal of secluded beaches only accessible by boat as key benefits for travelers.
This is not the first time Puerto Vallarta has garnered high praise from Condé Nast Traveler:
- It was first voted and recognized as the World’s Friendliest City in 2001, a recognition that catapulted the city to international fame and remains a landmark to this day.
- In 2019, the city was recognized as the fifth best small city in the world by U.S. readers. It also ranked eleventh on the “20 Best Cities in the World” list compiled by the magazine’s readers in England.
- Most recently, in 2023, Puerto Vallarta secured the 4th spot in the very same survey it excelled in this year.
This year’s 38th annual survey counted an impressive 757,109 votes from travelers, reinforcing the city’s consistent appeal.
Governor Celebrates Achievement
Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus quickly celebrated the achievement on social media, stating: “Puerto Vallarta has been named the favorite small city in Mexico and the second in the world in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards ranking. Through investment and collaboration, we will continue to position our tourist destinations.”
