Puerto Vallarta will observe the National and International Day Against Homophobia, Lesbophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia this Saturday, May 17, with a march aimed at raising awareness and fostering an inclusive environment.
The March Against Homophobia will begin at 6:00 PM on Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue, in front of the Sheraton Hotel and will end on the Malecón at the arches, where there will be performances from variousLGBTQ+ performing artists.
The event is a cornerstone of the lead-up to Vallarta Pride 2025 and marks the beginning of Pride Week 2025, which includes more than 15 events throughout the week, consolidating Puerto Vallarta, with the support of the government, as a leading destination for inclusive tourism and the defense of the rights of all people.
Héctor Gabriel Ramírez Betancourt, the city’s Director of Sexual Diversity, highlighted the importance of the demonstration (watch video on YouTube).
“It’s the day that reminds us that there’s still a lot of work to be done to reduce discrimination and homophobia,” Betancourt told Out & About PV.
He said peaceful demonstrations like this were necessary because even in a LGBTQ+ welcoming destination like Puerto Vallarta, discrimination towards the community still exists.
“Yes, of course, despite being an LGBT tourist destination, there are still many homophobic people,” attributing this to “a lack of sensitivity and empathy,” he explained.
Betancourt noted that this year’s march marks the 17th anniversary of the city’s first march for these rights. He recalled some of the early participants who paved the way, naming “Edgar Treviño, Benito Alemán, Doroteo Quintero, Beto Arévalo, yours truly, among others.”
The march is scheduled to step off at 6:00 PM from Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue, near the Sheraton Hotel and stadium area. Participants will march along the main thoroughfare, concluding at the arches on the malecon. The call is for citizens and visitors to join the demonstration, which carries a message of “dignity, resistance, and the full guarantee of rights.”
Following the march, a program will take place in the amphitheater at the Malecone arches, featuring statements from organizers and artistic performances by Brigitte Andrade, Poleth, Ayatana, Luis Arturo, and Alberto Cuevas, “El Diamante”.
Organizers have stated that the march is open to everyone, emphasizing the need for a peaceful and respectful event free from partisan or religious displays. This peaceful demonstration is organized by collectives, activists, and allies of the LGBTIQ+ community, with the support of the Good Government led by Mayor Luis Munguía González.
The municipality’s support for the march underscores Puerto Vallarta’s efforts to solidify its reputation as a welcoming destination that champions human rights.
Betancourt also provided guidance for those who may face discrimination or aggression: “They can go to the diversity office in Lázaro Cárdenas Park” for support.
The event serves as a poignant reminder of the collective commitment required to build a truly egalitarian community.
