The Second Date
The show-goers must go! Sticking to our slightly obsessive (read: fabulous) habit of seeing every show in town, there was no way we could miss the event of the season: CelloVoci at The Palm Cabaret.
For Jamie and Josh, Effie had already become a beloved friend, and this night was extra special—our big introduction to Mau and vice versa. Drinks in hand—me with my wine, Josh with his signature gin & soda, and Mau with a cold Modelo—we settled in for what turned out to be one of the most magical performances we’ve seen.
Mid-show, Mau leaned over and whispered, “She’s amazing! Has she been on TV? I think I’ve seen her before.” Little did he know, he was watching a real-life American Idol alumna who has toured the globe with Postmodern Jukebox (yes, she is that iconic). The entire audience was spellbound as the group performed “Seasons of Love.” Cue tears. As one found its way down my cheek, Mau reached for my leg and wrapped his arm around Josh.
It was the perfect moment.
The perfect second date.
The Chosen Family
From that moment on, the three of us were basically inseparable. If we weren’t working, we were together—talking, laughing, planning meals, and occasionally finishing each other’s drinks (and sentences).
Then came the big one: the introduction of our new formed “Throuple” to our chosen family. Every year, we host a post-Christmas, post-holiday dinner at the Villa—one last glittery hurrah before everyone pretends they’re doing a January cleanse.
This year, we were bringing Mau home for the holidays.
Between the string lights, the candles, and the divine holiday dinner prepared by the culinary dream team Pepe & Charlie Private Chefs, it was a night to remember. (Pro tip: never leave their dinner rolls unattended. They make the most dangerously addictive dinner rolls!)
Maybe it was the wine, or the warmth, or the simple joy of watching our friends embrace Mau like he’d been with us forever. But something beautiful happened that night. We all felt it—that magic that can’t be faked.
It felt warm and full of love. It was family. And we were all-in.
The First Meal Made Together
A few weeks later, Mau suggested a dinner to celebrate Three Kings Day—a name that, admittedly, felt very on-brand for us. The menu? A cultural fusion delight: Mau’s famous Mexican enchiladas paired with a classic French galette des rois for dessert.
What Mau may not have realized was how meaningful that combo was. Josh and I both come from French backgrounds. We didn’t even speak English until our awkward teenage years, while Mau was born and raised in Toluca, Mexico. This meal was more than food—it was a sweet (and spicy) symbol of blending our lives.
And here’s the best part: traditionally, a galette des rois contains a small token—whoever finds it is crowned “King for a Day.” Inside our galette? Two Canadian coins and one Mexican peso.
Three coins. Three kings. One new tradition.
Sometimes, life writes the most poetic stories.
