Since its inception in 2022, STUDS Bear & Leather Bar has rapidly become a cornerstone of Puerto Vallarta’s vibrant LGBTQ+ scene. Celebrated as the city’s first bear and leather bar, during the recent Best of Gays 2024 awards, STUDS clinched the Best Bear Bar title for the second consecutive year in a growing pool of Bear-themed bars in Vallarta.
STUDS owner Mike Owens, originally from Phoenix, Arizona, envisioned a space where the bear and leather communities could feel at home.
“Creating STUDS was about filling a void in Puerto Vallarta’s nightlife,” Owens shared. “The community’s embrace has been overwhelming, and this recognition is a testament to that support.”
This year’s awards also brought another reason to celebrate, as Victor, a standout member of the STUDS team, was named Best LGBT+ Bartender.
In 2023, responding to growing demand, STUDS expanded to two floors, absorbing the former Therapy Bar space on the first level. This expansion allowed STUDS to create a private area on the first floor, and expand The Gear Shop by STUDS – enhancing the venue’s immersive experience with more gogo dancers and two DJ’s for special events.
The bar’s ambiance is enriched by leather lounge seating and dynamic lighting. Guests are encouraged to shed their streetwear in favor of jockstraps, harnesses, or other leather attire, with custom merchandise available for purchase at The Gear Shop.
Agustin Ibanez, Owens’ partner & business partner, has expanded The Gear Shop by STUDS to include many more clothing and accessory options.
“Our goal has always been to create a welcoming space for everyone where they have options to purchase clothing, harnesses, jockstraps and other accessories to enhance their experience. We want STUDS to be more than just another bar in Vallarta, we are striving to create an ‘experience’ for our customers,” said Ibanez.
STUDS commitment to the community extends beyond its physical space. The bar also offers a mobile bar service for anyone that wants a bar set up in their home or place of business. Additionally, a portion of all the proceeds at STUDS Bear & Leather bar is donated to the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center where Owens serves as a founding Board member.
Reflecting on the journey, Owens expressed gratitude and optimism.
“The accolades and amazing social media response are affirmations, but the real reward is seeing our patrons enjoy and feel comfortable here. We’re excited for what the future holds.” as Owens alluded to some exciting additions next season.
Located at Basilio Badillo 283 in the heart of Zona Romántica, Studs offers an inclusive environment where patrons can express themselves freely.
