Construction began Monday, Sept. 1, to redirect groundwater spewing from The Colonial condominium basement on Guatemala Street, between Bolivia Street and Prolongación Brasil. The plan, developed by SEAPAL Vallarta, comes after mounting public concern over water flowing into a busy public way.

After years of complaints from residents, municipal authorities finally secured a commitment from the The Colonial condominium’s management to contribute financially to installing an underground pipeline. The agreement was reached following a meeting between the city’s Historic Center manager, Juan Pablo Martínez, and condominium administrators. This arrangement marks a turning point after “four years of indifference,” according to local reports.

The plan, devised under the direction of Mayor Luis Munguía and executed by SEAPAL Vallarta, involves installing a 4-inch pipe to channel the clean groundwater toward the nearby “Arroyo de los Camarones”. The project aims to resolve recurrent flooding on Guatemala Street and improve road conditions in this congested area.

Work is expected to take about 20 business days to complete, during which traffic between Bolivia Street and Shrimp Creek will be restricted. Motorists are urged to plan accordingly and follow directions from municipal traffic authorities.

Though groundwater drainage isn’t within SEAPAL’s direct jurisdiction, the utility reaffirmed its commitment to community welfare. This ongoing initiative aligns with broader efforts by SEAPAL to upgrade Puerto Vallarta’s water infrastructure. Upcoming projects include the construction of three filter galleries on the Mascota River and the reperforation of Wells 19, 38, and 1 in Ixtapa to strengthen potable water supply in northern neighborhoods.

Additionally, SEAPAL is executing a significant investment plan, supported by the federal water authority CONAGUA, to improve water tanks, extend sewer networks, and install treated water lines across the city. These efforts build upon earlier expenditures of over 18 million pesos on essential drainage and water works.
