In a symbolic and highly significant act, the proposal for a sisterhood agreement between Vallarta Pride and NYC Pride was signed—an accord that unites two of the most important Pride festivals in Mexico and the United States. The goal is to jointly promote human rights, inclusive tourism, cultural exchange, and LGBTQ+ visibility on an international scale.
The signing took place during the 2025 edition of Vallarta Pride—the largest in the event’s history—and was attended by Councilwoman Melissa Madero, representing Mayor Luis Munguía; Michele Irimia, Co-Chair of NYC Pride; Miguel González Herevia from the Consulate General of Mexico in New York; and Javier Jiménez, President of the Vallarta Pride organizing committee.
“This is the result of several months of joint work, now culminating in this partnership—a firm first step toward a binational agenda of inclusion, culture, and human rights. Puerto Vallarta reaffirms its leadership as a destination that embraces diversity and builds bridges with the world through pride and equality,” stated Councilwoman Melissa Madero after the signing. She extended special thanks to Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía for his essential support in this project, which was developed through the Commission for Tourism Services and Visitor Attention that she chairs.
The NYC Pride delegation included Joshua Woods, Matt Cheng, Zoe Gorringe, and Michele Irimia, who, in addition to being Co-Chair of the festival, is recognized as a prominent voice in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. She has spoken at events such as the Women’s March in New York and at various international conferences. Her leadership has been key in advancing equality and inclusion both within and beyond the United States.
During their visit to Puerto Vallarta, the official NYC Pride delegation, accompanied by staff from the Consulate of Mexico in New York, emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional and community ties between both cities. The agreement includes a joint 2025–2026 campaign focused on diplomatic cooperation, LGBTQ+ leadership development, and the tourism promotion of both destinations.
The recently concluded 2025 Vallarta Pride brought together over 30,000 attendees for the parade, with 1,900 participants, 90 contingents, 65 allied companies, and nearly 3 kilometers of route through the city. The Block Party drew more than 25,000 attendees, while hotel occupancy surpassed 80% during the nine days of activities. National and international media provided extensive coverage of this historic edition.
NYC Pride, for its part, is recognized as the global epicenter of LGBTQ+ Pride, born out of the Stonewall Riots in 1969. Each year, it draws more than two million people in a celebration that blends protest, remembrance, and visibility.
With this alliance, Puerto Vallarta and New York are now united as Sister Cities of Pride—bound by the shared conviction that respect, equality, and inclusion know no borders.
