A significant step towards fostering inclusion and equality in Puerto Vallarta was taken with the establishment of the Permanent Building Commission for Substantive Gender Equality and Diversity.
Chaired by Councilwoman María de Jesús López, the commission is composed of Councilors Luis Escoto, Melissa Madero, and Karla Alejandra Rodríguez.
Councilman Luis Escoto, the first openly gay councilman, pledged his unwavering support for policies promoting equality and dignity for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Commission Chair María de Jesús López reiterated her commitment to championing the rights of vulnerable groups in Puerto Vallarta, including people with disabilities, women, indigenous people, Afro-descendants, and the LGBTQ+ community.
The event was marked by the presence of prominent community leaders and activists, including Carlos Plascencia and Alfredo Soria from Vallarta Pride; Karla Macedo from Vallarta Trans; Everardo Galván from Includes; Denisse Covarrubias and Víctor Espíndola, from the Movement for Equality in Mexico, MOVii; Daniel Estrada from LGBT Connection Vallarta; Pedro López from Vallarta Gay+ Community Center and Marisela Marín from Diverso Vallarta, all from the Red Diversidad Vallarta.
During the session, advocates highlighted the importance of creating an office dedicated to sexual and gender diversity and called for amendments to regulations to prevent discrimination and establish effective sanctions. Lorena Barajas from Colectivo Vallarta LGBT emphasized the urgent need to address the rights of trans children.
With the installation of this commission, Puerto Vallarta reaffirms its dedication to equality and human rights. The commission will play a crucial role in developing and implementing public policies that ensure inclusion and respect for all.
