An art opening turned into a neighborhood gathering Saturday as IF6WAS9 Contemporary Art Space debuted its new gallery with an evening devoted to two very different takes on contemporary Mexican art.

The Nov. 29 opening brought visitors into the new space in Pitillal Centro for an inaugural exhibition by painter Jorge De la Cruz and marine biologist and sound artist Oscar Frey. Each artist addressed the crowd, outlining the ideas behind the works on display and the paths that led them to Puerto Vallarta.

De la Cruz presented bold, large-format paintings that blur the line between realism and abstraction. In brief remarks, he said his work grows out of emotional exploration as much as visual technique, using layered paint and strong color to give weight to the human figure and charged moments of quiet and tension.

In an adjoining room, Frey unveiled an immersive audio-visual installation inspired by the humpback whales that migrate through Bahía de Banderas each year. Combining recorded underwater sound with projected images and shifting light, the piece invited viewers into a slowed, meditative experience of marine life rarely seen from shore. Frey described the work as an attempt to bridge science and art through sound.

Mark Uhalley, the gallery’s director, said the goal is to create a platform for artists whose work reflects the evolution of contemporary art in Mexico, while also drawing the local community into conversation with visiting collectors and travelers. Guests moved easily between the two exhibitions, gathering in small circles to talk with the artists and compare first impressions of the work.

The opening marked the first public event at the new location on Calle Aldama in Pitillal Centro. Organizers said future exhibitions and programs are planned as the space settles into its role as a new address for contemporary art in Puerto Vallarta.
