For decades, the LGBTQ community has fought against discrimination in general.
On this occasion, after many years of effort, the Catholic Church finally accepts and supports the LGBTQ community and who better to do so than the head of state and the eighth sovereign of Vatican City, Francisco, is the 266th pope and current Pope of the Catholic Church.
For the first time in the history of the Catholic Church, a pope has made statements that endorse and support the rights of homosexual people, not only to live in a civil union with a person of the same sex, but also to the right to form a family. This is how Pope Francis surprised the world with his statements, which were preserved for posterity in the documentary Francesco, directed by Evgeny Afineevsky, which was released at the Rome Film Festival held on October 21 of the recent year.
“Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God and they have the right to a family. No one should be expelled or feel miserable about it.”
These were the words that Pope Francis used, which shocked the entire world.
“Francesco” is the name of the documentary and after an interview with EFE magazine the creator of the film Evgeny Afineesvsky declares that the documentary is dedicated to “A Humanity that creates dramas and disasters, and the Pope, who with humility and wisdom treats to guide us to build a better future”
Evgeny Afineesvsky is a Russian-born film director, producer, and cinematographer living in the United States. In 2016, Afineevsky was nominated for an Oscar and Emmy for his documentary Winter on Fire.
Of course the opinions did not take long to wait and here the most prominent.
The American Reverend James Martin, applauded Francis’s comments, calling them ” Pope Francis’s support for same-sex civil unions is a major step forward in the church’s support of LGBTQ people. It is in keeping with his pastoral approach to LGBT people, including LGBT Catholics, and sends a strong signal to countries where the church has opposed such laws.”Martin posted on his Twitter account.
