The Marigalante, the iconic pirate ship and one of Puerto Vallarta’s most well-known tourist attractions, sank on the afternoon of Friday, October 10, 2025.

The accident occurred in the vicinity of the tourist area of Los Arcos de Mismaloya. According to information that began circulating on social media and was later confirmed, the vessel was unable to reach port after it began to sink while offshore.

Crew and Passengers Safe

The rapid response of local emergency services, as well as boat operators from the Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán areas, was crucial.

Authorities have confirmed that all the crew was evacuated in time. The vessel was not carrying tourists aboard.

According to Civil Protection and Firefighters of Puerto Vallarta, the incident was caused by a mechanical or electrical failure in the bilge pumps: “Due to the strong waves, it was impossible to rescue the vessel, which unfortunately ended up sinking,” concludes the Facebook post shared by the agency.

An Icon of the Bay

The Marigalante was much more than a tourist boat. It was a stunning replica of the Santa María galleon, one of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Constructed entirely of wood, it had become an icon of the port.

It was famous for its day and night tours across the bay. Its main draw was its pirate show, which featured acrobatics, sword fights, and fireworks—a show that delighted both those on board and the tourists strolling along the boardwalk at night.
