Jordon Carnegie Triumphs as Hedwig in Electrifying Puerto Vallarta Debut
Photos by Oscar Almeida
Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the cult-favorite rock musical, exploded onto the Puerto Vallarta scene with a thunderous debut on Thursday, May 2nd at The Palm Cabaret. The two-hour show left audiences raving about the powerful performances and electrifying music.
Critics and Audience Alike Sing Praises
Marcia Blondin, editor of The Vallarta Mirror, couldn’t contain her enthusiasm.
“The Palm Cabaret and Bar has been around for 24 years, and they have learned how to do things properly,” Blondin wrote. “Nearly every show this season just past was a sell-out. Unarguably, they are doing everything right and appealing to a wide audience in the heart of the Gayborhood, and last night’s debut in Mexico of Hedwig and the Angry Inch blew the imaginary socks off every single person in the audience.”
Blondin went on to praise the venue’s signature approach: “This is also typical of The Palm—wait until the end of the season, then drop a bombshell of a theatrical performance that needs to play weekly forever and ever, amen, not just four dates. I also LOVED the Playbill. It’s so good to be able to put names on band members, and the backstory is essential.”
The show’s energy was undeniable. Blondin described the music as “head-banging, screaming, strobe-lit heavy metal/punk rock.”
It was also a sentiment echoed by Mike Owens, owner of Studs Bar, a popular nightspot in Puerto Vallarta.
Owens, initially unsure what to expect, admitted to being completely captivated and wrote on Facebook, “I must say that I wasn’t sure what to expect with Jordon Carnegie’s version of Hedwig,,” Owens wrote. “I had only seen the movie and couldn’t imagine what the play would be like on stage. From the moment ‘Hedwig’ stepped on stage, I was completely mesmerized! It was the most captivating of performances. Buy your ticket now for the next show.”
Stellar Performances Take Center Stage
Jordon Carnegie received high praise for his nuanced portrayal. Reviewers highlighted his ability to blend humor, vulnerability, and a captivating stage presence.
Tricia Lyman, administrator of the large Facebook Group “Puerto Vallarta: Everything You Need and Want to Know,” offered her perspective writing in the Facebook group, “Last night Mike & I had the privilege of being at the opening of Hedwig and the Angry Inch – Puerto Vallarta,” Lyman wrote. Jordon Carnegie did an outstanding job of telling the story. The dialogue needed to be learned & then presented to engage an audience for 90 minutes, is no easy task.”
Yoalli Guerrero, Carnegie’s costar, was equally impressive. Her powerful vocals and captivating stage presence as Hedwig’s “servant” were a highlight for many. Lyman continued, “Yoalli Guerrero played his [sic] ‘servant’ & her performance & vocals were outstanding!”
