On Monday, January 5, 2026, the luxury boutique hotel Hacienda San Ángel, located in downtown Puerto Vallarta, was officially awarded its membership plaque for Haciendas y Casonas de Jalisco. This association brings together properties that offer unique guest experiences and contribute significant patrimonial value to the state.

The distinction was presented by the organization’s president, Sergio Montaño. The event was attended by Paula Castañeda, hotel owner and daughter of founder Janice Chatterton; Michelle Fridman, Jalisco’s Secretary of Tourism; Alejandra Cornejo, director of Tourism for Puerto Vallarta; and Luis Villaseñor, director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust.

An emotional Paula Castañeda reflected on her mother’s legacy in establishing the property as an architectural landmark in Puerto Vallarta. She explained that since its opening, the hotel’s mission has been to provide a unique guest experience rather than focusing solely on commercial goals.

Hacienda San Ángel is the second hotel in Puerto Vallarta to join the association, following Hotel Patio Azul in the Conchas Chinas area, which joined in 2025.

Membership Criteria

Sergio Montaño outlined the criteria for affiliation, which involves a multi-step process including an initial approach, site visits, and a vote by current association members. Applicant hotels must have been in operation for at least one year.

“What we value most is that it is an independent, one-of-a-kind hotel that provides a unique experience. It must have soul and a lot of heart so that guests leave happy. Hacienda San Ángel meets all of these criteria,” Montaño stated.

Secretary of Tourism Michelle Fridman emphasized that this distinction is vital because it reaffirms the destination’s identity: “Puerto Vallarta is not only a diverse and successful destination with strong numbers; it is a destination with soul, identity, and history. We are the most ‘Mexican’ beach destination in the country, which is why it is important to highlight these small hotels that tell a story.”

Hacienda San Ángel is one of the most romantic architectural gems in Puerto Vallarta, with a history deeply tied to the city’s Hollywood Golden Age. The core of the property was purchased in the 1970s by Richard Burton as a Valentine’s Day gift for his then-wife, Susan Hunt.

Over the years, entrepreneur Janice Chatterton acquired and meticulously restored the original villa and several adjacent properties. She transformed them into a luxury boutique hotel known for lush gardens, colonial antiques, and architecture that evokes the elegance of old Mexico.

Following the passing of Janice Chatterton in 2019, her daughter Paula Castañeda and her family have continued the property’s legacy. Today, the hotel offers exclusive suites with spectacular views, a swimming pool, and a high-end restaurant. The estate also holds prestigious accolades, including a Michelin Key and the AAA Three Diamond award.

Hotel Hacienda San Ángel is located at Calle Miramar 336, El Centro. For more information, visit https://haciendasanangel.com.
