Few countries are as celebrated when it comes to culinary heritage as Mexico and France. Both have earned UNESCO recognition for their food traditions, marking them as treasures of intangible cultural heritage. According to Taste Atlas, a global encyclopedia of traditional food, Mexican cuisine ranks third in the world, while French food ranks at number eight.

Now, imagine combining the soul of Mexican cooking with one of France’s most iconic dishes—the crepe. The result? Possibly the best crepe of your life. And you’ll find it in Puerto Vallarta’s vibrant Zona Romantica at a cozy gem called Creperie House.

Behind memorable food, there’s often a meaningful story—and this one starts with Barbara Maribel Rodriguez and Juan Carlos Ramirez, the wife-and-husband duo behind Creperie House.

Juan Carlos, originally from the Puerto Vallarta area, spent over 35 years working across Mexico in the hospitality industry, with the last 16 dedicated to food and beverage management. Barbara was always by his side—supporting him professionally and personally. But as Juan began thinking about retirement, Barbara started thinking about what might come next. A business, maybe? Something they could build together?

At the time, they were living in Cabo San Lucas, where Juan worked at the luxurious Grand Velas Resort, home to the Michelin-starred Cocina de Autor. Surrounded by high-end culinary creativity, Barbara was inspired, and one idea stuck: crepes.

She saw crepes as more than just a dish—they were the perfect vessel for endless flavor possibilities. But Barbara didn’t want to replicate what already existed. She wanted to create something different, something gourmet, and something uniquely hers. Having been born in Mexico City, her creation needed to reflect her Mexican roots.

Juan, recognizing her passion, sprang into action. He enlisted chefs from the resort to help Barbara experiment with textures, sauces, and flavor combinations. With access to a Michelin-level kitchen and mindset, they had the ideal environment to refine her vision.

Barbara began experimenting—always respectful of the traditional French crepe, but determined to infuse it with new life. Night after night, after long shifts at the resort, Juan would return home to sample Barbara’s latest creation. Together, they’d evaluate flavor, texture, balance, and presentation. These evenings became their creative lab—and many of those early experiments have found a home on today’s menu.

Their first restaurant opened in Cabo. However, the pull of home was strong, and in mid-2020, they returned to Juan’s hometown to open Creperie House in Puerto Vallarta. Since then, the couple has worked side-by-side daily, sharing their love for food and each other with every customer who walks through the door.

At Creperie House, each crepe is made with the same care and intention as if Barbara were serving it to her family. Entirely self-taught, she prepares every dish with the excellence she absorbed from her time around Michelin-star standards. Meanwhile, Juan welcomes guests like old friends, creating a personal and unforgettable experience.

The menu is as diverse as it is inventive. There’s a wide selection of savory, sweet, and vegetarian crepes. But what sets Creperie House apart is the dough. For savory options, you can choose from spinach, delicate herbs, carrot, or beet crepe bases. Fillings include ham, chicken, beef, shrimp, eggs, cheese, pineapple, and more. Vegetarian options are just as creative, including combinations like mushrooms and spinach, three cheeses, poblano peppers, or a classic caprese.

Every savory crepe is served with their signature Cilantro-Jalapeño sauce—but don’t be surprised if you’re offered something a little more adventurous. Barbara and Juan constantly create new sauces featuring flavors like chipotle, coriander, grilled pineapple, or even habanero. Their philosophy? No limits.

Sweet crepes are no afterthought, either. Choose from unique doughs like red velvet, walnut, or coconut. Then, dive into the gourmet sweet crepe selection, with options that range from chocolate to tequila, lemon to red fruit. Each is paired with a specific sauce to complement and elevate the experience. One must-try? The homemade caramel-tequila-orange juice sauce—complete with their house-made caramel, developed to achieve just the right balance of sweetness.

To complement the food, the beverage list includes a range of hot and cold drinks: rich coffee, herbal teas, creamy frappes, and fresh smoothies. Whether you’re starting your morning or ending your evening, there’s something to pair with any crepe on the menu.

Creperie House is open mornings and evenings, making it perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even dessert after dinner elsewhere. If you’re just wandering through Zona Romantica and craving something special, it’s an ideal stop.

If you have dietary restrictions or special requests, don’t hesitate to ask. The couple makes garbanzo bean-based crepes for customers with gluten sensitivities and has even been known to dash to the nearby Emiliano Zapata market to find a particular ingredient requested by a guest. Barbara and Juan understand that a happy customer is likely a returning one, and returning customers often become part of their extended Creperie House family.

Many visitors return more than once during a short vacation. Recent friends of mine dined there twice during a week-long trip—and would have gone again if they’d had one more day.

Whether you sit indoors or out on the patio, the atmosphere feels more like a family garden than a commercial eatery. The couple has carefully cultivated a sidewalk oasis with strawberries, grapes, wild berries, and even the occasional hummingbird. Much of the furniture is handmade, contributing to the warm, inviting feel of the space.

Barbara and Juan are a beautiful example of building a new chapter in life rooted in something they love. They now live in Zona Romantica in a home in Juan’s family for over 100 years, just steps from the restaurant. After decades of long hours in the hospitality industry, they’ve made a promise to themselves: Sundays are for family. No matter how busy life gets, they draw their greatest strength from being together.

Of course, like any small business, they want to succeed. But success, to them, isn’t defined by money. Their greatest reward is hearing from happy customers. They’re doing something right with over 350 Google reviews and a 5-star average rating.

Creperie House is already a smashing success if success could be measured in warmth, creativity, passion, and the seamless blending of two of the world’s most beloved cuisines.
