Héctor “Teto” Betancourt, the former public official and LGBTQ+ activist, has confirmed his resignation as the Head of the Office of Sexual Diversity for the Puerto Vallarta Municipal Government, led by Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía.

Betancourt announced his departure after less than a year in that position via a video on his social media, citing personal and health reasons. The 58-year-old, who suffers from hypertension, stated his decision was a preventative measure.

“I’m 58 and have hypertension, so this is to prevent my blood pressure from spiking or having a heart attack,” he explained in a video posted on social media.

When contacted directly, the activist declined to provide further details but emphasized his gratitude to the mayor for the opportunity to lead the office.

The municipal government has not yet announced Betancourt’s successor, but it is expected to issue a statement in the coming days calling for experienced candidates to lead the organization, based at the Lázaro Cardenas Park in Zona Romántica.

In a recent interview, Teto spoke about his life as an LBGTQ+ activist and highlighted his work during his tenure, which included organizing awareness talks against homophobia and sexual abuse in vulnerable areas of Puerto Vallarta and providing support to public health institutions, such as CAPASITS, that focus on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections.
