Bar Frida 4.0 is hosting a no-gender “Finding Frida” contest, scheduled for Saturday, April 26 at 9 p.m., at its location on 493 Venustiano Carranza. The event coincides with this year’s Vallarta Pride 2025 theme, “Vallarta Pride Revolution – Future Had No Gender,” and invites participants of all gender identities to show how they interpret and embody the spirit of Frida Kahlo.
The contest encourages contestants to perform either a karaoke song or lip-sync act, presenting their own unique vision of Frida. The first-place winner will receive $1,000 pesos and a custom-made costume designed by Bar Frida 4.0, to be worn while representing the bar in the Vallarta Pride Parade on May 22. Second and third place prizes are $500 pesos and $300 pesos, respectively.
“We’ve always been about inclusion and self-expression,” said Bar Frida founder Tom Finley. “Frida Kahlo represents resilience, art, and individuality — values we try to embody at Bar Frida every day. We can’t wait to see how people bring her to life in their own way.”
Participants must register in advance via Facebook Messenger (@barfrida4.0) or by emailing mike@mikelaking.com. Contest entries will close at 11 p.m. on the night of the event, with winners selected by a panel of judges and audience votes.
Bar Frida 4.0 is also gearing up to celebrate a major milestone — 25 years of continuous operation. Established by Finley in 2001, the bar has grown from a humble gathering place into one of Puerto Vallarta’s most iconic LGBTQ+ establishments. Over the years, Bar Frida has moved through four locations, each time expanding its reach and community impact.
In honor of the anniversary, the bar will host monthly “Customer Appreciation Nights” beginning Thursday, June 19, from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring food and drink specials, along with complimentary shots of Frida’s Tequila.
