Following the unfortunate sinking of the iconic pirate ship Marigalante, Naviera Juan de la Cosa SA. de CV., the company that owns the ship, has quickly confirmed its plans to keep one of Puerto Vallarta’s main tourist attractions alive.
Shortly after the ship’s unfortunate sinking, on the afternoon of Friday, October 10, 2025, the company announced the imminent arrival of a “sister ship” that will take over to continue the popular themed tours.
The new vessel is expected to be operational in Banderas Bay within three months. This announcement, issued via a press release on the company’s website, seeks to assure tourists and the local community of the continuity of this deeply rooted Vallarta tradition.
The Marigalante, built in Alvarado Veracruz, Mexico by the Mar, Hombre y Paz Civil Association, (Sea, Man and Peace a non-profit organization), was not just a tour boat; it was a symbol of identity and history. Constructed in 1987 and officially launched in 1992 to commemorate the V Centennial of the Discovery of America, the vessel was an exact replica of the “Santa María,” the caravel used by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Since its arrival in Puerto Vallarta, it had become a living emblem, gracing the bay waters and offering unforgettable experiences to millions of visitors.
Details of the Wreck and Refunds
The sinking of the Marigalante occurred on the afternoon of the same Friday, October 10, in front of the Buenaventura Hotel beach. The ship suffered a failure in its bilge system while being towed to port. Strong waves in the area intensified the emergency, complicating efforts and leading to the total sinking. Fortunately, the swift action of emergency services allowed all crew members aboard to be safely rescued.
Naviera Juan de la Cosa also reported that full refunds will be issued to all individuals who purchased tickets for future pirate ship tours. In the coming days, the company will detail the official mechanism for processing these transactions in a safe and orderly manner.
Government Support and the “Marigalante” Legacy
The Secretary of Tourism for the State of Jalisco, Michelle Fridman, expressed her sorrow over the incident via her official Facebook account but showed clear optimism regarding the replacement news. The head of SECTUR Jalisco pledged to provide the necessary support to ensure the tourist attraction continues:
“We hopefully hear the announcement of the upcoming arrival of the Marigalante’s sister ship to the bay waters, to continue its legacy of history, excitement, and Vallarta pride. Rest assured that, from @secturjalmx, we will contribute so that this arrival marks the beginning of a story full of new adventures for our beloved Puerto Vallarta,” Fridman stated.
As of yet, Naviera Juan de la Cosa has not disclosed the name or specific characteristics of the vessel that will replace it.
