Ferry Vallarta, a new maritime transportation service connecting Puerto Vallarta and the coastal community of Yelapa, Cabo Corrientes, completed its inaugural voyage on Thursday, January 8, 2026. The vessel departed from the Los Peines Pier in Marina Vallarta, heading south across Banderas Bay.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Michelle Fridman, Jalisco’s Secretary of Tourism, alongside shipping entrepreneur Miguel Tejeda and key officials from the Puerto Vallarta City Council and the National Port System Administration (ASIPONA).
A Modern Mobility Solution
Authorities presented the ferry as a strategic alternative for both tourists and local residents. It aims to showcase the natural beauty of the south coast while providing a reliable transit option for those who commute daily for work or personal reasons.
“What I love about this project is that it expands the city’s mobility options,” noted Michelle Fridman. “It represents the start of a ‘nautical ladder’ we have long awaited. It will serve workers commuting south, travelers avoiding road traffic, and visitors alike. Vallarta deserves world-class maritime mobility.”
The vessel has a capacity for 400 passengers and is operated by a crew of eight. It arrives in Vallarta with a proven track record, having previously served routes such as Playa del Carmen–Cozumel and Mazatlán–Islas Marías.
Schedule and Pricing
In its initial phase, Ferry Vallarta will operate three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday).
- Departure: 9 a.m. from Los Peines Pier (Marina Vallarta), with a brief stop at Los Muertos Pier in the Romantic Zone before heading to Yelapa.
- Return: 4 p.m. from Yelapa.
- Cost: $600 MXN (Round trip) | $300 MXN (One way).
Passengers on the inaugural trip enjoyed onboard music, snacks, and drinks available for purchase, as well as a bilingual audio guide (English/Spanish) detailing the city’s history and local marine biodiversity.
Future Expansion: The “Nautical Ladder”
The project has ambitious plans for growth. Future phases include:
- Daily service.
- Additional stops: Including a planned new pier at Playa Camarones (5 de Diciembre neighborhood), as well as Las Ánimas and Quimixto.
- Extended Route: Reaching as far as Playa Corrales at the southern tip of the bay.
Miguel Tejeda, the ferry’s owner, also stated that he is working to secure a public subsidy. The goal is to offer a discounted local rate—estimated at approximately $50 MXN round trip—to ensure the service remains accessible for regional residents.
