For seven years, Chachalaca Bar has been more than a nightlife stop in Puerto Vallarta — it’s been a gathering place where drag performers, locals and visitors come together to celebrate creativity, inclusion and chosen family. What began as a modest space without windows or air conditioning has grown into a welcoming venue that reflects the spirit of the city’s LGBTQ+ community.
This weekend, Chachalaca Bar celebrates seven years in business with a disco-themed anniversary party — and a look back at how much can change in less than a decade.
“When we opened, we didn’t even have windows or AC,” said owner Christopher Biles. “Looking back now, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come. Every year has brought subtle changes, but together they’ve transformed the place into something we’re really proud of.”
Chachalaca has evolved from a small, unpolished space into a mainstay of Puerto Vallarta’s nightlife scene. The bar has undergone renovations that include higher ceilings, new signage, soundproof windows and a refreshed aesthetic. But for Biles, the physical changes are only part of the story.
“Our partnerships with groups like Jet Tour and Bear Week have been one of the unexpected joys of our journey,” Biles said. “Helping them improve their guest experiences — and being part of their events — has helped us grow our reputation, our community, and our business.”
Chachalaca has also developed a reputation for creative cocktails and a strong connection to local entertainment. Its homemade cucumber vodka, house-infused spicy margarita mix, and commitment to using fresh ingredients reflect what Biles calls an “intentional approach” to hospitality.
“We try to keep everything as fresh, premium, and intentional as possible — because our guests deserve it,” he said.
Entertainment has always been central to Chachalaca’s identity, particularly its drag performances. The bar has become known for offering opportunities to emerging drag artists.
“At Chachalaca, drag isn’t just entertainment — it’s one of our passions,” Biles said. “We love supporting new queens, giving them a stage to learn, grow, and express themselves. Some are unpolished when they arrive, and that’s the point. We want to be the place where they develop their voice, style, and artistry.”
Alongside nightly drag shows and happy hour specials, Chachalaca’s schedule features early-evening performances — appealing to those who prefer to enjoy Vallarta’s nightlife before midnight. The bar also makes a point of featuring local Mexican artists to keep its entertainment rooted in the community.
ChaChaLaca bar is located near the famous Los Muertos Pier, Francisca Rodríguez 136, Zona Romántica, Emiliano Zapata, 48380. It offers indoor and outdoor seating, with 2 x 1 happy hour daily from 4 to 9 p.m.
