The Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Department reports that Tropical Depression Seventeen-E has intensified into Tropical Storm “Raymond,” located off the coast of the state of Guerrero.
According to the most recent report from the National Meteorological Service (SMN), Raymond is located approximately 135 kilometers south of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and 1,115 kilometers south of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. The storm is packing sustained winds of 45 km/h (28 mph), with gusts up to 75 km/h (46 mph), and is moving west-northwest at 24 km/h (15 mph).
In Puerto Vallarta and the north coast of Jalisco, heavy to very heavy rains are expected over the next several hours, accompanied by winds of up to 60 km/h, which could increase on Friday as the system progresses.
The swell in the bay and maritime areas could reach between 2 and 3 meters, with an increase of up to 4 meters during Friday, posing a risk to navigation and recreational activities at sea.
A tropical storm warning remains in effect from Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, to Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco. For the state of Jalisco, showers with occasional heavy rain and high waves are forecast for the coastal strip, primarily in the municipality of Puerto Vallarta, over the next few days.
In addition, the Ministry of Education, in coordination with Jalisco Civil Protection, has suspended classes in some municipalities of the state, including Puerto Vallarta, as a precautionary measure in anticipation of the storm.
In light of this, the Director of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Puerto Vallarta, Misael López Muro, called on the public to remain alert to the evolution of the system, follow the information issued by official sources, and heed the recommendations of the authorities of this agency.
