From MOVii, on the occasion of the 7th anniversary of Paco Ruiz’s death, we present “In Memoriam: Paco Ruiz (1961-2016)”. His valuable work and his legacy in favor of human rights and the LGBTQ + community in Puerto Vallarta continues. Below is our commemorative message.
In Memoriam: Paco Ruiz (1961-2016)
Today marks the 7th anniversary of the departure of Paco Ruiz, a luminary that shone not only in Puerto Vallarta, but also in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He was born on October 4, 1961 and left us prematurely on September 7, 2016.
Founder of the Paco Paco Club and faithful defender of minorities, Paco Ruiz established himself as a pillar of sexual and gender diversity. His dedication and passion for human rights echoed in every corner of Puerto Vallarta, and his commitment to those affected by HIV transcended borders.
With courage and determination, Paco faced adversity. In times when Puerto Vallarta was not openly defined as friendly to the LGBTQ community, he, with the opening of his bar in 1989, marked a before and after. Thanks to his resistance against discrimination and corruption, he managed to turn the city’s history around.
His arrest in 1991 became Puerto Vallarta’s “Stonewall moment.” With the media support of Nino Canún, he not only managed to expose the intolerance of local authorities, but also catalyzed the transformation of Puerto Vallarta into the iconic LGBTQ haven it is today.
Paco was more than a defender of rights, he was a true hero, someone who faced adversity without fear, always seeking a more equal world for everyone. He was, is and will be an inspiration. His legacy has left an indelible mark and that is why it is imperative that the Puerto Vallarta Human Rights Award bear his name.
Despite being an HIV/AIDS survivor, life decided to take Paco unexpectedly at the age of 54. However, his legacy lives on and will continue to shine as a beacon of hope, equality and love.
Although Paco is no longer physically with us, his spirit and his passion live in every corner of Puerto Vallarta and in the hearts of all those who fight for a more just world. Today, in his memory, we give thanks and honor all that he did for our community. His life was a gift to many, and his legacy will be eternal.
Rest in peace, dear Paco Ruiz. Your light will never go out.
